Assessments
What is a passenger assessment?
A passenger assessment is a way of finding out which transfer method, type of vehicle or equipment is required to enable a person to access and travel safely in a vehicle.
Who is it for?
- Less able people of all ages
- A person wishing to obtain specialist vehicle advice
- Children and families with special requirements
This type of assessment may involve a Senior Occupational Therapist.
This assessment may take up to 2½ hours.
Where will I be assessed?
In most cases we like to conduct passenger assessments at the Cornwall Mobility Centre where we have available a wide range of equipment for assessment and demonstration purposes.
However, if your circumstances make it difficult to attend the Centre, the Assessors may conduct the assessment at an alternative location e.g. your home address. We also carry out assessments in Plymouth, Exeter and Holsworthy.
Examples of assessments
Depending on you abilities and your vehicle there may be different options for you to consider:
- If you have difficulty getting into the passenger seat we have some smaller items of equipment such as swivel cushions and transfer boards which you are welcome to try.
- We have a 90º swivel seat in one of our assessment vehicles which may help you transfer into the car.
- If you are having difficulty loading your wheelchair into the back of the car we can demonstrate a wheelchair hoist or ramps and advise you on the most suitable equipment for you.
- We have a range of special needs car seats for children, and vehicle harnesses for children or adults.
- A wheelchair accessible vehicle may be necessary to accommodate passengers who sit in their chair whilst travelling.
Everyone has a unique difficulty. Contact us and our Assessment Team will help you determine what equipment or vehicle would best suit your needs. We are also able to fit certain adaptations in our workshops.
Assessment charges
If you require a demonstration of equipment please contact us for an appointment. There may be a charge for this.
If you require a full risk assessment of your travelling requirements including a written report and recommendations there is a charge of £50.00.
