Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some typical questions clients ask prior to / during the assessment. If you have a question please contact us and we will be happy to give you the answer!
Q. Do I need to revise the Highway Code for my assessment?
A. No.
Q. Can you take my licence away?
A. No. The assessment team can only advise that you discontinue driving. The only people with the power to take a licence away are the DVLA.
Q. Will you tell the DVLA about my assessment?
A. The DVLA will only receive a copy of the assessment report if they have commissioned the assessment in the first instance.
Q. Can I use my own car for the assessment?
A. Yes, if you have current insurance for your vehicle and the assessment team feel it is safe for you to do so.
Q. Which medical conditions mean you should have an assessment?
A. For guidelines please refer to the DVLA website www.dvla.gov.uk
Q. Is a driving assessment like a driving test?
A. No. Unlike the standard driving test, you do not "pass" or "fail" a driving assessment. The assessment process requires that you demonstrate the ability to drive safely, and in complete control of a vehicle with due consideration for other road users.
Q. If I am advised I should discontinue driving, what are my options?
A. If your diagnosis / medical condition may improve over a period of time you may like to consider a re-assessment at some point in the future. However, if it is likely you will not drive again, alternative choices could include equipment such as a scooter to allow mobility / freedom in your local area, or you may consider alternative methods of transportation.
Q. If I disagree with the outcome of my assessment what should I do?
A. Contact the Cornwall Mobility Centre by telephone or in writing, and we will explain our conclusions in further detail. If you are still dissatisfied we may be able to conduct a further on-road assessment with an alternative ADI at no extra cost to gain a second opinion.
Q. If I need adaptations what should I do?
A. We will usually supply an estimate from our workshop department with your final assessment report. For further information regarding adaptations go to the "vehicle adaptations" section of this website.
Q. Can I have a friend / relative accompany me for the assessment?
A. We encourage clients, whenever possible, to be escorted to and from the assessment as the process can be lengthy (up to 2½ hours) and some clients may become fatigued. Friends / relatives can accompany clients through all parts of the assessment process apart from the in-car parts.
Q. I need a drive-from-wheelchair assessment. Can you provide this?
A. We are able to obtain the use of specialist vehicles for this purpose. For further information please contact a member of our assessment team.
