Tuition
Practical tuition for novices
The Cornwall Mobility Centre provides practical driving tuition for novices. Depending upon the area in which you live and the availability of our ADIs, tuition can be arranged with us, or we can recommend a local instructor in your area.
Tuition from the Cornwall Mobility Centre is currently £21 per hour. Travelling costs may apply for tuition conducted from your home address - please contact the Centre for details. In order to have practical driving tuition you must be in possession of a valid provisional driving licence.
Driving tuition with the Cornwall Mobility Centre is conducted by Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors (DSA ADIs), and is taught to the same high standards as with any other professional driving school. An advantage to certain people attending the Cornwall Mobility Centre is that we are able to cater for clients who have disabilities or learning difficulties. We have a range of specially adapted vehicles, and our ADIs are trained and experienced to teach people whether they are disabled or have a learning difficulty.
Theory & hazard perception tuition
The Cornwall Mobility Centre provides theory and hazard perception tuition.
We have available PC CD-ROMs where you can practice taking a test, see examples of typical questions and obtain information.
Our ADI's will be on hand to guide you through the theory and hazard perception requirements and prepare you for your test.
Refresher / Familiarisation tuition
The Cornwall Mobility Centre can provide refresher / familiarisation tuition.
In some circumstances, our ADI's may recommended a course of refresher / familiarisation tuition to those clients who have had an assessment but whose driving may be 'rusty' owing to a break from driving for a period of time. In other circumstances it may be because skills need to be refreshed, or perhaps confidence needs to be rebuilt.
You may like to refer yourself for refresher / familiarisation tuition if you feel your driving is not to the standard it should be.
Common reasons for refresher / familiarisation tuition include:
- Confidence building
- Updating skills and standard of driving
- If you have had a break from driving for a period of time
- If you wish to practise specific types of driving e.g. dual carriageway / roundabouts or manoeuvring into a parking bay.
Pass plus courses
Pass Plus is a training course specifically aimed at new drivers. Pass Plus will build upon your existing skills and knowledge. It will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, and can help you to become more confident on the roads.
Pass Plus is made up of six practical modules which include:
- Driving in town
- Driving in all weathers
- Driving on rural roads
- Driving at night
- Driving on dual carriageways
- Driving on motorways
Anyone who holds a full UK licence and has passed their practical driving test within the last twelve months is eligible to take part in the scheme. You will not have to take a test at the end of the course but you will be continually assessed. You must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an achieved or exceeded standard. In exceptional circumstances, if a module can not be done on the road it will be covered in a theory session.
The Pass Plus course currently costs £136.
The benefits of the Pass Plus course are:
- Gain valuable driving experience safely - you will be taught how to deal with a wide range of road and traffic situations, many of which you probably will not have faced before.
- Build on your existing skills and knowledge - it can take years to become a skilled driver. Pass Plus helps get you there by speeding up the learning process under expert tuition.
- Reduce your risk of being in a road crash - the course will help boost your awareness of all kinds of hazards and help you learn how to anticipate, plan for and deal with them safely.
- Save money on car insurance premiums - discounts are offered by particular insurance companies taking part in the scheme. The amount you save will depend on the company you choose, you may even save more than you paid for the Pass Plus course. Do not worry if you have not got a car at the moment, you may be able to defer the discount for up to two years. Again, check with your insurance company. If you passed your test more than a year ago you should check that you would be eligible for the discounts on offer from your insurance company before you take the course.
- Boost your confidence - if you feel nervous driving on your own, the Pass Plus training can help you become more confident on the roads.
- Give peace of mind to your loved ones.
